Welcome to The Guardrail.
At the Election Reformers Network (ERN), we believe that polarization, contempt for the rule of law, and political extremism are threatening our democracy and our way of life. In part, these problems stem from bad rules we’ve long needed to fix. Outdated voting rules block innovation in our party system and force voters to choose “the lesser of two evils.” Partisan insiders exercise too much control over elections, undermining accountability and trust. We can’t heal our divisions until we modernize the rules that shape our elections.
The Guardrail is our space to share news, insights, and commentary on the challenges facing our democracy — and the reforms that can keep it on course.
Each post will spotlight the major threats challenging our electoral system, highlight where the guardrails of democracy are holding firm, and explore the structural changes needed to prevent election-related abuse of power. Think of this newsletter as both a warning system and a guidepost: calling out threats while pointing toward solutions that restore balance and strengthen trust in American democracy.

Our Mission
We’re on a mission to modernize how elections are conducted in the United States. Our goal is to safeguard the systems that govern elections by reducing the dominant role of parties — so voters can trust the process, results, and fairness.
Why We Care
Polarization is intensifying. From redrawing district lines to selecting key election officials, rules made long ago are being wielded for partisan gain. The result? Deep divides, distrust, and governments that respond to extremes rather than the public good.
Old systems, new challenges. Some election laws, norms, and practices were built for a different era. They don’t always withstand today’s partisan pressures — leading to conflicts of interest, opaque decision-making, and voter skepticism.
We can do better. There are proven models — both internationally and within the U.S. — that show impartial election governance can reduce conflict, improve turnout and trust, and lead to more responsive government. ERN draws on those models to push for reforms that work.
